Speaking of Rich Strike, we’ve all read that the connections of the chestnut son of Keen Ice and Gold Strike (by Smart Strike) were unsure about the colt’s readiness to compete in the Preakness two weeks after dominating his rivals in the Kentucky Derby.

Rich Strike’s connections had no intention of running him in the Preakness. Rich Strike’s original strategy depended on the Derby; owner Richard Dawson recently informed reporters.

If we ran in the Derby, depending on how the race went and our horse’s health, we would give him additional time to recover and rest before running in the Belmont.

Ingenious Minister

The offspring of Tamboz and Creative Cause is this grey roan colt (by Tapit). This year, Creative Minister placed third in the Preakness Stakes, two lengths behind Early Voting and Epicenter, despite not competing in the Kentucky Derby.

His connections felt confident enough in his talents after his victory in an allowance race on Derby Day that they supplemented him for the Preakness for $150,000. He earned back just a tiny portion of their money, pocketing $330,000 of the $1.5 million Preakness reward.

How did a horse who was not even considered for the Kentucky Derby or Preakness become one of the Belmont Stakes’ most likely winners? It might be related to his incredible May 14 victory in the Grade III Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont by a ten-length margin.

Or it might be… Naw. The victory in the Peter Pan Stakes.

Only one underdog and one sleeper are left after Un Ojo dropped out, and We the People and Creative Minister were promoted to my “money finish” watch list.

Glider in Gold

This chestnut coal, a 20/1 underdog and a daughter of Ghostzapper and Golden Scarf (by Orientate), has the ideal pedigree to grant a bettors wishes. He has presented himself admirably enough to enter the contest but not bold enough to become anyone’s favourite.

He’s worth at least a value show ticket at those odds, while a win slip might be significantly more lucrative.

Rich Strike will easily win the Belmont, especially when compared to this field, in my opinion. Keep in mind that the Belmont, at 1.5 miles, is the longest of the Triple Crown races.

Additionally, keep in mind that Rich Strike was a distant third-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, consuming dust at a high teens level. Until the race’s latter portion.

Rich Strike will be honking for the passing lane once all the other horses in the Belmont Stakes have run their course.

Nest

I’m aware that most people believe Nest will perform admirably in the Belmont. Just too humble to triumph. Nay-nay, I say. The statistics are on her side.

She outperforms all her possible rivals in speed data, career statistics (six money finishes in six starts, four of them victories), and experience in graded stakes triumphs. I’m tempted to say that she might triumph in this contest.

Donegal, Mo

Mo Donegal, the clear favourite, will most likely do well here. It won’t be long before the question of how much he’ll take home for himself and his connections is resolved. But I don’t think he’ll perform any better than second or even third.

In 2022, who will win the Belmont Stakes?

If I were a betting man, I would wager on Rich Strike to win (spoiler alert: I am). I’m aware that everyone believes Mo Donegal will win this race, partly because they don’t think Rich Strike can repeat his unexpected 80/1 underdog triumph at the Kentucky Derby.

His odds aren’t as high as they once were, but they’re still high enough to justify taking a chance on him.

Additionally, I would advise purchasing a value show ticket on Nest. Depending on how long her odds get as race day approaches, you might want to bet her on all of the races.
